The Russian River provides recreational opportunities to millions of Sonoma County visitors each year, yet only a very small portion of the 100 miles of riverfront land is publicly accessible. Development of a park in the center of Guerneville has long been a desire of the community. The proposed development in this new 5.33-acre park consists of paved paths; group and family picnic sites; small outdoor stage; small craft boat portage; restroom building; open grass areas; nature study areas; vehicle access and parking; amenities and appurtenances. The purpose of the project is to provide additional recreational opportunities along the Russian River to visitors and residents of Sonoma County and Guerneville.

The Guerneville River Park project was approved by the Board of Supervisors on October 5, 2004PDF icon (753Kb). The project is located near the intersection of Highway 116 and the Russian River at 13882 State Highway 116 in Guerneville, Sonoma County.

Phase I

Phase I improvements were completed in January 2007 and included construction of the Drake Road Extension improvements, onsite parking for 12 vehicles, a restroom building, family picnic sites, potable water and other utilities, site amenities such as fencing, pipe gates and garbage cans, paved paths connecting the facilities in the western area of the project site and landscaping and irrigation. Additional family picnic sites, pathways and a group picnic area will be constructed in July and August of 2007. These improvements were funded with a grant from the Russian River Redevelopment Agency.

Plans for a new outdoor stage will be developed over the next year by Praxis Architects. A public process where the community is invited to make comments will occur in the fall and winter, with construction anticipated in 2008.

Phase II

This phase would develop the recreational vehicle and boat trailer parking, a boat portage facility, paved road and turn around area, as well as paved and compacted gravel trails within the eastern area of the park, connecting gravel paths between the east and west sections of the site, additional picnic tables, interpretive signs and landscaping and irrigation.

Phase III

This phase would include development of on-site paved parking for 24 vehicles and family and group picnic facilities.
