Adult and Aging ServicesDiane Kaljian, Director The Adult and Aging Services Division works with individuals and the community to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable adults. Staff provides protective and supportive social services as well as community training and coordination. The staff advocates for and strives to achieve the goals of safety, health, dignity, and independence for older adults, veterans and persons with disabilities. (707) 565-5940 OR (800) 667-0404 Investigates suspected incidents of elder and dependent adult abuse, neglect or exploitation. Provides 24-hour response to life threatening emergencies involving elder and dependent adults. Educates the community about elder abuse prevention and identification. (707) 565-5950 Coordinates planning and funding for programs allowing persons sixty years of age and older to maintain maximum independence in the community. The AAA Advisory Council, a 21-member volunteer committee, works closely with the Agency in the areas of planning, funding, and advocacy. The Council makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on the needs of seniors, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers. In 1999, the AAA, with support of law enforcement, community-based agencies and interested community members, established the Elder Abuse Prevention Council. The council is active in education and training in the prevention of elder abuse and court advocacy for elder abuse victims. Link: http://www.socoaaa.org/ In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) (707) 565-5900 Provides in-home care to low income older adults and people with disabilities in order to help clients remain safely and independently in their homes. IHSS social workers conduct home visits to assess the client's needs and determine the number of hours a client can hire a caregiver. IHSS Payroll staff issue and process IHSS provider timesheets. In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Public Authority (707) 565-5700 Maintains a Registry of screened caregivers to refer to IHSS consumers. Offers monthly training classes for caregivers and consumers. Serves as the "employer of record" for IHSS caregivers for the purposes of negotiating wages and benefits. The IHSS Advisory Committee, a 10 member committee appointed by the Board of Supervisors, provides ongoing advice and recommendations regarding IHSS to the Board of Supervisors, IHSS Public Authority, and IHSS Program. The Advisory Committee meets on the fourth Monday of the month at the Adult and Aging Conference Center (3725 Westwind Boulevard). The purpose of the program is to promote client independence through arranging and coordinating services that help support individuals to remain safely at home. Multipurpose Senior Service Program (MSSP) (707) 565-5970 Provides case management to Medi-Cal eligible, frail elders, age 65 and older. The Program's goals are to prevent placement in a nursing facility while fostering independence and dignity for seniors. Public Administrator/Public Guardian/Public Conservator (PA/PG/PC) (707) 565-5735 The Public Administrator (PA) investigates and may administer the estates of persons who die with no will or without an appropriate person willing or able to act as administrator. The Public Guardian (PG) or Public Conservator (PC) conducts the official County investigation into conservatorship matters. The PG/PC also acts as the legally appointed conservator for persons found by the Superior Court to be unable to properly care for themselves or their finances or who cannot resist undue influence or fraud. Such persons usually are older, frail and vulnerable adults or persons suffering from severe mental illness.
