A Message From the Sonoma County Health Officer
Influenza is a very serious illness. Most healthy people recover from the flu without problems but every year tens of thousands of Americans die from complications related to the seasonal flu. The 2009 H1N1 influenza is a new strain of virus and many people have no immunity to it. It has become so widespread that it has been declared a worldwide pandemic.
Getting vaccinated is the best protection against the flu. The 2009 H1N1 vaccine is made using the same methods used to produce the seasonal flu vaccine, which has a very good safety record.
There have been delays in the production and distribution of the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, so certain groups at higher risk of H1N1 flu and its complications are a priority for the early doses that we are receiving. These priority groups include:
