An adolescent with confirmed H1N1 2009 influenza died this week from complications associated with the flu following a brief hospitalization, Dr. Mary Maddux-González, Sonoma County Health Officer, announced today.

Flu Prevention for Children Going Back to School this Week
Over 71,000 thousand children in Sonoma County start back to school this week. Because the H1N1 2009 virus (swine flu) is currently circulating in our community, school officials and the County of Sonoma Department of Health Services are providing information to families about what they can do to help prevent the spread of the flu.

Thousands of Children in Sonoma County and the State to be Denied Health Insurance
The State run Healthy Families program that covers over 12,500 children in Sonoma County and 919,000 in California has implemented an enrollment freeze for new children into the program as a result of a $90 million funding shortfall and State budget stalemate. Thousands of children from low-income families in Sonoma County and throughout California will be denied health coverage starting today.

Statement from Dr. Mark Horton, Director of the California Department of Public Health, Regarding The Raising of the Pandemic Alert Level
"Today the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the Pandemic Alert Level from Phase 5 to Phase 6. This reflects the novel H1N1 Influenza A's (swine flu) geographic presence in more places around the world, but does not signify an increase in the flus severity.

As of today, there is one confirmed cases of swine flu in Sonoma County. The County has opened its public health surge center and is actively tracking the H1N1/swine flu situation nationally and locally. The Sonoma County Public Health Laboratory is conducting tests on specimens from Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties. Specimens must be collected and submitted through a medical provider (i.e. doctor's office).

Late last night, Sonoma County public health officials were notified by the California Department of Public Health - State Lab that the county's first probable case of H1N1 flu (as reported on Friday, May 1st) was confirmed as positive for the H1N1 virus.
