Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition Publishes Counseling Guidelines

Santa Rosa, CA - The Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition, in collaboration with the Sonoma County Perinatal Alcohol and Other Drug Action Team, the Drug Free Babies program, and the Public Health Division of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, has published breastfeeding guidelines for practitioners who work with infants and childbearing women.

The publication, titled "Counseling Guidelines: Breastfeeding and Maternal Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use" (pdf), contains six recommendations for practitioners, and specific information on alcohol, tobacco, nicotine replacement therapy, methadone, marijuana, methamphetamine and hallucinogenic amphetamines. This information can inform practitioners as they determine how best to protect the health of infants while also promoting bonding between mother and infant.

Public Health staff conducted a literature review and worked in conjunction with the Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition and the Sonoma County Perinatal Alcohol and Other Drug Action Team to prepare this reference. Practitioners will find this publication helpful in providing anticipatory guidance to all women who breastfeed or are planning to breastfeed.

"Counseling Guidelines: Breastfeeding and Maternal Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use" (pdf) is available online at www.sonoma-county.org/mcah.
