Public Health Regional Laboratory: Testing Services
TB-Mycobacteriology Culture-ID-Sensitivity Testing
This testing service is available to health providers and clinics in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties.
Testing Method
N-Acetyl-L-Cystine digestion method is used to test for mycobacteria. Cultures are held for 8 weeks.
Specimens
Mycobacteriology testing is performed on sputum, tissue, CSF, blood, and other respiratory samples or body fluid.
Specimen Collection
Please collect 10 ml of the first morning coughed-up sputum, and place the sample in a sterile, screw-top container.
Specimen Storage
Store specimens at refrigerator temperature.
Specimen Transport
Specimens must be refrigerated and transported in a biohazard bag, and may be dropped off by courier at the laboratory during normal business hours.
Testing Results
Smear results are phoned or faxed the day of testing. Preliminary positive results are available at 2 weeks. Final results are available at 8 weeks after receipt of specimen at the laboratory. A written report will be provided for all specimens received. Positive results will be phoned and/or faxed upon request.
Antibiotic sensitivity is available upon request.
Molecular testing can be ordered for smear positive samples.
