Rabies DFA Testing
This testing service is available to Animal Control Services in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties.
Testing Method
Rabies DFA is used for detection of rabies virus via direct fluorescent antibody.
Specimens
Rabies DFA is used on brain tissue specimens.
Specimen Collection
Please provide the entire brain of the animal by removing the organ from the body.
Specimen Storage
Store the specimen in refrigeration.
Specimen Transport
Specimens are only accepted through Animal Control Services. Please contact the Sonoma County Animal Shelter for specimen pickup.
Testing Results
Results from high-risk specimens are available 4 to 5 hours after receipt of specimen at the laboratory. Results from routine specimens are available 1 to 2 days after receipt of specimen at the laboratory. A written report will be provided for all specimens received. Positive results will be phoned and/or faxed upon request.
