Certification & Accreditation: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification

Initial Certification for Out-of-state EMTs
and Nationwide EMT Certification EMTs


Do you have EMT certification outside of California, or hold certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)? These are the steps to follow, and the materials needed to obtain your California EMT certification:

Step Description Material Needed
1 Fill out CVEMS application Completed, signed application
Download form (pdf)
2 Provide proof of current out-of-state EMT certificate and proof of passing National Registry skills and written test Copy of current out-of-state EMT card and NREMT card (or certificate showing successful completion of National Registry skills and written test).
3 Provide proof of age and identity (you must be 18 or older) Copy of your legal photo identification
4 Provide proof of current CPR course completion Copy of your CPR card
5 Pay initial certification fee Check or money order for $35

Napa EMTs: In-person certification processing is available by appointment at the Napa EMS office. Call the Napa office at 707-253-4341.
