Subject:  Potentially Deceptive Website Reported

We wanted to pass along to you some information this office received about a Website that could be regarded by some as potentially deceptive in its presentation.   The email address of the site is bailout.hud-gov.us.  Although a disclaimer is provided at the end of the site’s home page that identifies the presenting company, “House and Urban Department,” as a for profit business not affiliated with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, there is some concern that the appearance and content of the page could tend to mislead an unsuspecting reader.  

The site’s home page, titled “Home Affordable Modification Program,” makes reference to mortgage modification, avoiding foreclosure, and related concepts.  It then invites the reader to apply online for a “U.S. Loan Modification Plan” and it asks for certain identifying information as part of the application process.    

We wish only to confirm that this particular Website has no affiliation with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and to remind users to exercise appropriate caution when seeking information on the Internet.
